Minority Birth Rate: Racial and Ethnic Minorities Surpass Whites In U.S. Births For First Time, Census Reports

The report comes as the Supreme Court prepares to rule on the legality of Arizona's strict immigration law.

WASHINGTON (AP) — For the first time, racial and ethnic minorities make up more than half the children born in the U.S., capping decades of heady immigration growth that is now slowing. New 2011 census estimates highlight sweeping changes in the nation's racial makeup and the prolonged impact of a weak economy, which is now resulting in fewer Hispanics entering the U.S. "This is an important landmark," said Roderick Harrison, a former chief of racial statistics at the Census Bureau who is now a sociologist at Howard University. "This generation is growing up much more accustomed to diversity than its elders." Click here to continue reading.

Latino Births Deliver New Political Power And Battles In Texas

Across America the Latino birth rate is poised to deliver more political power to Hispanics than many Americans may anticipate.

by Janell Ross In the 1940s, when Monica Cruz's grandfather tried to register to vote, officials in Los Fresnos, the small South Texas town where he lived, demanded a fee. The fee was a poll tax, one of the many devices that Texas authorities used to suppress Latino and black voting, Cruz's grandfather told her. That’s an ugly part of Texas’ past and Cruz’s Mexican-American family history. But on Monday, when early voting begins for the primary in San Antonio where Cruz lives and elsewhere across the state, Texas politics will pass a milestone of sorts. For the first time in the state's history, a quarter of all Texas congressional races will be held in specially designed districts where Latino voters make up the majority. That’s a figure …

Read the English version.

Two South Gate Industrial Facilities Among Nation's Worst Toxic Sites

The Environmental Protection Agency will take the lead towards cleaning up these locations.

Presione aquí para la version en español.  Last week, the Environmental Protection Agency added the Southern Industrial Area and the Jervis B. Webb Co in South Gate to its superfund list. This list is made up of sites that the EPA considers among the most toxic in the nation. Both sites were included because of soil and ground water contamination. “These industrial plants are located in the I-710 corridor, a priority area for EPA, where low-income and minority populations are overburdened by pollution,” said Jared Blumenfeld, an EPA Regional Administrator. “Now that these sites are officially on the Superfund list, EPA will begin full-scale investigations of the contaminated soil and drinking water sources.” The sites are contaminated with…

Immigrant Moms Beg To Stay In The U.S.

Immigrant Mothers To Be Deported Beg ICE To Let Them Stay In US With Their Children

There may not be anything more painful than a mother having to say goodbye to her child. And yet that is the predicament that many mothers, including Carmen and Maria, are facing. After both women pleaded with immigration officials to be allowed to stay with their children, Maria was granted an extension but Carmen was ordered out of the country, CBS reports in this video. Carmen, who has lived in the US for 22 years, now has a monitoring brace on her ankle until her flight back to Peru in three weeks. She and her 14-year-old son, Brian, made tearful pleas to Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) to allow her to stay. “I feel depressed, nervous, sometimes scared… I don’t want to lose her, I want to be next to her, step by step," Brian …

In a recent article we reported that George Troxcil, South Gate's city manager had a yearly salary of $175,000. Few Election Dollars Devoted to South Los Angeles in 44th District Race

The campaigns for Congresswomen Janice Hahn and Laura Richardson have spent more than $1.9 million in the last year. Little of that money has been spent in neighborhoods like South Gate and Lynwood.

The two candidates in the 44th Congressional District race, Congresswomen Janice Hahn and Laura Richardson, have less than a month before the non-partisan primary on June 5. Yet among the millions of dollars spent by the two campaigns so far, few of those dollars have reached communities in South Los Angeles since the new congressional map for the region was finalized in August of last year. Overall since Jan. 1, 2011, Hahn's campaign has spent more than $1.7 million on her special election to the previous 36th District and in the current election for the 44th, which covers South Los Angeles and stretches down to Carson and Long Beach. Richardson's campaign has spent significantly less, just a little over $277,000. Despite the big totals …

Of course the Congresswomen need to spend more money and time in the cities that make the new 44th District! I am from South Gate and am very close to Lynwood and have never heard of Congresswoman Laura Richardson come and speak to the Latino people. She is an African American and only focuses on issues that involve African Americans as she is a member of the Black Caucus. She has no idea what …   more ›

Gonzalez Goes Against Move to Increase Salary of New City Manager

Henry Gonzalez gave the only dissenting vote when the City Council approved the salary and benefits package that would be presented to future city manager candidates.

Last Tuesday, the City Council voted 4 to 1 in favor of creating a higher salary and benefits package for South Gate’s future city manager. The new package will not affect the contract of George Troxcil, South Gate’s current city manager, who will be leaving his position in the fall.  Councilmember Henry Gonzalez disagreed with the measure, and placed the only dissenting vote. “I don’t think we should negotiate against ourselves,” said Gonzalez. “I think we should keep it low.” The new package that was approved moved the city manager salary of $175,000 a year to one that would range from $200,000 to $215,000. Gonzalez insisted that times were tough, and that any salary raise should wait. “When times get better we can pay everyone more,” …
